Anemia – Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Clinical researches

09.04.2026

With the arrival of spring, many people expect more energy, freshness, and vitality. Instead, however, fatigue, weakness, and lack of concentration often occur. These complaints are frequently attributed to so-called “spring fatigue,” but in some cases they may be a sign of anemia. Anemia is one of the most common conditions affecting people of all ages. It is characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells or a decreased level of hemoglobin, which results in a reduced ability of the body to transport oxygen to the tissues. As a result, a range of symptoms may occur that can significantly affect quality of life.

What Is Anemia?

Hemoglobin is a key component of red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to all organs and tissues. When its levels are reduced, the cells do not receive enough oxygen, which leads to a feeling of fatigue and weakness.

Anemia is not a disease in itself, but rather a condition that is often the result of another underlying health problem.

Main Causes of Anemia

The causes of anemia may vary, with the most common including:

  • Iron deficiency – the most common cause, often associated with improper nutrition, blood loss, or increased requirements (e.g. during pregnancy)

  • Vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency – leads to impaired red blood cell formation

  • Chronic diseases – such as kidney disease, inflammatory processes, or oncological conditions

  • Genetic disorders – for example, thalassemia or sickle cell anemia

  • Blood loss – acute or chronic (for example, in cases of heavy menstruation or gastrointestinal problems)

Symptoms of Anemia

Symptoms may vary depending on the severity and cause, but most commonly include:

  • Persistent fatigue and weakness

  • Weakness and reduced work capacity

  • Pale skin and mucous membranes

  • Shortness of breath during physical exertion

  • Rapid pulse or palpitations

  • Headache and dizziness

  • Cold extremities

It is important to note that in the early stages, anemia may be almost asymptomatic and detected only through laboratory testing.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of anemia begins with a detailed medical examination and medical history. The main method of confirmation is a complete blood count, which provides information on hemoglobin levels and the number of red blood cells.

If necessary, additional tests may be ordered, such as:

  • Serum iron and ferritin

  • Vitamin B12 and folic acid

  • Inflammatory markers

  • Additional tests to identify an underlying disease

Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment and prevention of complications.

Active Clinical Trial

An active clinical trial is currently being conducted for patients with anemia. Participation in such studies provides access to modern therapeutic approaches and monitoring by medical specialists.

If you are experiencing symptoms of anemia or have already been diagnosed, you may consult a specialist regarding the possibilities for participation.
