Nephrology
Nephrology is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and conservative treatment of diseases of the kidneys and the urinary system.
Kidney diseases are often associated with systemic disorders. Chronic kidney disease, in particular, is a proven risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Timely prevention and treatment reduce the risk of complications and the progression to kidney failure.
Consultation with a nephrologist is recommended in cases of acute and chronic kidney failure; urinary tract infections and glomerulonephritis; blood in the urine and kidney stones; and kidney damage associated with systemic diseases.
