Health Risks of Overweight

Have you recently looked at black and white photographs in your grandparents’ albums? And did you notice how all the people on those pictures look? If you have not noticed this detail – look at them again. It is very unlikely that you will spot overweight people there.

Today, unfortunately, the problem of overweight affects more and more people from an early age. This problem that plagues modern society has a simple explanation. We all lead a mostly sedentary lifestyle. In the office, in the car, on the couch. We don’t have to work hard out on the field to put bread on our table, for example. Bread, like everything else, is conveniently displayed on the shelf in the store. The only effort required is to reach and put it in the shopping cart. We will not delve into the topic of its content of leavening agents, flavor enhancers, and other artificial additives.

The same goes for meats, which contain hormones and antibiotics, carbonated soft drinks with a huge amount of sugar and colorants, artificially grown vegetables in a short period of time, shiny wraps of all kinds of delicious desserts and snacks with long shelf life…

The problem of obesity has several main aspects:

Aesthetic

Today, gaining weight seems normal and not much attention is paid to it. People with a few extra pounds pass each other constantly, hurrying to do their errands. The sight of a fit body in good shape is what arouses interest and hidden envy. Fortunately, in recent years, the trend of leading a healthy lifestyle is gaining momentum. Taking care of the body through various activities and sports, as well as healthy eating, are practiced by more and more people. Sometimes, unfortunately, one goes to extremes in the pursuit of sculpting the perfect figure. Abuse of certain substances and stimulants is also part of this trend and does more harm than good. Achieving the perfect body should not be at all costs!

Social

People who lose control of their weight are often subjected to ridicule and mockery. Children are the cruelest in this regard. Their overweight peers are forced to tolerate jokes and are usually rejected because of their appearance. For both children and adults, this kind of self-neglect leads to a number of psychological traumas. They feel insecure, unable to develop their potential, and often fail to realize themselves in life. Such people are ostracized on the basis of appearance; they find it difficult to find a good job and feel unhappy. Disorders such as depression, bulimia or anorexia, which are triggered on a mental level, are not uncommon. Such are a number of eating disorders that are extremely difficult to diagnose and treat. Often, the outcome for people suffering from them is fatal.

Health

Our everyday lives are tense, dynamic, and uncertain. Stress is a great problem for society. Dirty air and poor nutrition steal a little from our lives every day. When we add extra pounds to all this, our health is indeed in real danger. It is no coincidence that more and more people have to take various medicines every day. High cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, musculoskeletal problems, cardiovascular disease, sexual and reproductive problems and much more – all of them are the result of overweight and improper lifestyle in most cases.

What does overweight lead to?

Snoring

Many people snore. With some of them, the problem may be in the structure of the nasal apparatus. For the most part, however, the reason is just being overweight. Sleep apnea is a severe form of this disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The strain on the body and especially on the heart muscle is enormous. Poor sleep and constant fatigue are among its other side effects. Many people are unable to sleep unless they use a special device to improve breathing.

Cause of a number of diseases

Bulgaria tops mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases. Strokes, heart attacks, coronary heart disease – they are directly connected with the gaining of extra pounds. The development of early forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s are also among the consequences of obesity. Excess weight puts a strain on the skeletal system, and so pain, problems and manifestations of conditions with severe damages are quick to follow.

If you make an effort to reduce your weight by at least 10%, you will immediately feel the difference. Your condition will improve and your self-esteem will be boosted. You do not need to starve, quite the opposite. Frequent meals (about five times a day) are highly recommended. It is important not to overdo it and to avoid fats and complex carbohydrates. Limit sugar, white flour, alcohol, and carbonated beverages. Drink plenty of water.
